The Taj Mahal was commissioned by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, in memory of Mumtaz Mahal. According to the original Taj Darshan account, construction began in 1631 following her death after giving birth to their fourteenth child.
The monument was conceived as a magnificent mausoleum on the banks of the Yamuna. Its white marble surfaces, balanced composition, monumental dome and intricate decorative work came together to create one of the defining achievements of Mughal architecture.

Where MarbleMeets Mastery
The beauty of the Taj Mahal comes from the harmony of its architecture, proportion and ornamentation. Its great dome, four minarets, marble surfaces, delicate screens and decorative inlay create an exceptionally balanced composition.
Its relationship with the Yamuna and surrounding garden further strengthens the experience, allowing the monument to appear different as daylight changes across its marble surfaces.
